Hi JOHN YOUNT,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities. I understand you'd like to learn the transition of Microsoft Office from macOS Mojave to macOS Catalina. I can help provide you additional information.
You have the ability to use Office 365 and Office 2019 for macOS Catalina. In addition Office 365 and Office 2019, supports macOS 10.14 and 10.13. That information is outlined on Microsoft's website through this link here: Microsoft OS requirements for Office 2019 for Mac and Office 365 for Mac
Also, in macOS Catalina, 32-bit apps are no longer compatible. I suggest contacting the app developer to see if there's a 64-bit version available for macOS Catalina. Here's a helpful article with additional details: 32-bit app compatibility with macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 and later
With regard to external hard drives, you can visit Apple's website to review a list of hard drives that are available: Storage If you need help with selecting an external hard drive, I suggest contacting Apple for assistance: Contacting Apple
Cheers!
